Bulk Dry Ice

Dry Ice Supplier in Pittsburgh

Dry ice is a versatile tool used for various purposes like shipping perishables like food and medical products. If your business in the Pittsburgh region goes through a lot of dry ice, getting it in bulk from Greco Gas can save you time and money.

The Dry Ice Advantage

Dry ice, a solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2), is made by liquefying and injecting carbon dioxide into a holding tank. Afterward, it’s frozen to a temperature of -109 degrees Fahrenheit and compressed into solid ice.

Unlike regular ice, Dry ice doesn’t melt into a liquid when warming up. It skips the liquid phase, converting into a gaseous form when heated. As a result, it’s perfect for a variety of industrial, commercial and domestic uses like blasting, frozen foods, medicines and much more.

  • Transportation

Probably the most common use for dry ice is as a refrigerant tool. With a temperature of -109 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s ideal for transporting foods, beverages, biomedical samples, and other perishable items from one location to another.

  • Storage

Perishable items such as foods and biomedical samples must be kept cool, and they’re put at risk during a power outage. Dry ice is a practical and cost-efficient way to store temperature-sensitive items for long periods.

  • Cleaning

Sanitation is paramount for environments like food and beverage production, medical facilities, and clean-room manufacturing. Dry ice effectively cleans equipment surfaces without leaving behind chemical residues. It’s suitable for applications aiming to keep things immaculate while minimizing the cost and waste associated with chemical cleaning products.

  • Medical Treatments

Medical professionals use dry ice to treat warts and other exophytic outgrowths. It’s combined with nitrogen and is used to thermally destruct, or burn, the outgrowth and underlying tissue.

  • Pandemic Response

The ability to keep temperature-sensitive vaccines cold for prolonged periods has become a primary concern in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not all communities have electricity access, and some of them can be many hours or days from a healthcare facility. What’s more, distribution sites can be set up in public areas where electricity isn’t within reach. With a low weight and an effective temperature of -109 degrees Fahrenheit, dry ice is suitable for vaccine preservation and distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

As an experienced dry ice supplier in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas, we’ve seen just about every possible scenario. Here’s a list of frequently asked questions about dry ice that can help better understand the product and the process.

Yes, we do. Having dry ice on hand enables us to meet client needs quickly.  For large volume users:

  • Dry ice is made to order via our high-tech pelletizers
  • The dry ice is made fresh for our clients – it does not sit in bins for days losing product which is a common practice by many of our competitors.

It’s easy. Place the dry ice in a well-ventilated area at room temperature, and it will sublimate away. Never toss dry ice into a trash can or chemical waste container.

Dry ice turns into carbon dioxide gas when melting. If enough carbon dioxide gas is present, a person may become unconscious. It can also cause cold burns to the skin.

A non-air-tight, insulated container such as a chest or cooler is a great way to store dry ice. The thicker the insulation, the better. Putting it in a well-ventilated location is also best.

The special insulated storage bins that we offer to higher volume clients come in two main sizes:

  • 570LBS capacity bin with wheels (see doc for more details on dimensions)
  • 1500LBS capacity bin (no wheels/forklift needed for distribution) Other size insulated containers are available for rent or purchase.

The exact lifespan varies by the storage environment, but a block can last up to three days. Pellets may last up to two days, depending on the use case.

The amount you require depends on many factors, such as application size and usage frequency. Please feel free to reach out to Greco Gas to discuss your bulk dry ice needs.

Dry ice is sold and priced per pound. The exact cost of dry ice is determined based on whether it’s supplied in block or pellet form and how much is needed. Give us a call to discuss your project further.
