Dry Ice Shapes, Differences, and Applications

As a dry ice block manufacturer, you can choose from several different shapes of dry ice.

Slabs & Slices

Dry ice slabs are large, flat pieces cut to a certain thickness to facilitate storage and shipping applications. They meet cold shipping requirements for food, perishable industrial components, healthcare products, and medical supplies.

Slabs come in different thicknesses and slice weights, from 0.6 inches to 2.4 inches. weighing 1.4 to 5.4 pounds. The most common sizes purchased are:

  • slab (2in. thickness, 4.5lbs approx.)
  • slab (2.4in. thickness, 5.4lbs. approx.)

*Slabs & Slices must be pre-ordered. The minimum order is 50lbs. or greater.

Blocks

Dry ice blocks are larger than slabs and more durable for extended cooling periods. This type of dry ice block is ideal for micro dry ice blasting machines manufactured by Cold Jet® under the i3 line. The dimensions of the dry ice block come in a standard size of 5x5x10inch. Block weight is approximately 8-10lbs.

*Blocks must be pre-ordered and there is a minimum order of 10 blocks or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

As an experienced dry ice supplier in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas, we’ve seen just about every possible scenario. Here’s a list of frequently asked questions about dry ice that can help better understand the product and the process.

Yes, we do. Having dry ice on hand enables us to meet client needs quickly.  For large volume users:

  • Dry ice is made to order via our high-tech pelletizers
  • The dry ice is made fresh for our clients – it does not sit in bins for days losing product which is a common practice by many of our competitors.

It’s easy. Place the dry ice in a well-ventilated area at room temperature, and it will sublimate away. Never toss dry ice into a trash can or chemical waste container.

Dry ice turns into carbon dioxide gas when melting. If enough carbon dioxide gas is present, a person may become unconscious. It can also cause cold burns to the skin.

A non-air-tight, insulated container such as a chest or cooler is a great way to store dry ice. The thicker the insulation, the better. Putting it in a well-ventilated location is also best.

The special insulated storage bins that we offer to higher volume clients come in two main sizes:

  • 570LBS capacity bin with wheels (see doc for more details on dimensions)
  • 1500LBS capacity bin (no wheels/forklift needed for distribution) Other size insulated containers are available for rent or purchase.

The exact lifespan varies by the storage environment, but a block can last up to three days. Pellets may last up to two days, depending on the use case.

The amount you require depends on many factors, such as application size and usage frequency. Please feel free to reach out to Greco Gas to discuss your bulk dry ice needs.

Dry ice is sold and priced per pound. The exact cost of dry ice is determined based on whether it’s supplied in block or pellet form and how much is needed. Give us a call to discuss your project further.
