What is Coleman Grade CO2/Refrigerant Gas?

Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is a common colorless, odorless gas all around us. We exhale it, plants use it as food, and so on. Different grades of CO2 are manufactured for use in various industries for different applications, including Coleman Grade carbon dioxide, also known as Refrigerant gas or Instrument Grade CO2.

Understanding Refrigerant Gas

Coleman Grade carbon dioxide is a type of gas used in commercial refrigeration systems. It is 99.99% pure and contains less than 0.01% non-condensable gases and moisture. Due to its high purity, Coleman Grade CO2 is the recommended carbon dioxide grade for refrigeration applications.

Greco Gas produces and stocks the following types of Coleman Grade CO2:

  • Vapor Withdrawal 50Lb. Cylinder (Non-Diptube) – Greco Gas Part# SPECO
  • Liquid Withdrawal 50Lb. Cylinder (Diptube) – Greco Gas Part# SPECODT (most popular)

Standards for Instrument Grade CO2

The purity standards for Coleman Grade CO2 are stringent to ensure its effectiveness in refrigeration systems:

  • < 2 PPM moisture
  • < 20 PPM O2 (Oxygen)

These standards make Coleman Grade CO2 ideal for systems requiring ultra-pure gas. Notably, this type of CO2 is commonly used for cleaning and recharging refrigeration cooling systems that were previously handled by nitrogen or Freon.

Coleman Grade Carbon Dioxide Industries and Applications

Coleman Grade CO2, often referred to as R744 Refrigerant or Refrigerant Gas in industry contexts, is used in refrigeration, HVAC systems, and industrial cooling applications. Many mechanical contractors, for example, may search for this type of gas but refer to it as R744 Refrigerant, rather than by its formal name, Coleman Grade CO2. This term, along with Instrument Grade CO2, are other names for the same product, emphasizing its high purity and suitability for specialized systems.

Coleman Grade CO2 Classification Standard

  • < 20 PPM O2 (Oxygen)
  • < 10 PPM H2O (Moisture)
  • < 50 PPM N2 (Nitrogen)

This classification guarantees a high-quality CO2 with minimal impurities, ensuring smooth performance in refrigeration and other critical applications.

Liquid Vs Gas Withdraw

Coleman Grade CO2 is available for both liquid and vapor withdrawals. Liquid CO2 is often preferred for larger systems that require higher pressures, while gaseous CO2 is typically used in smaller systems

Coleman Grade CO2 vs. Other Gases

Using any grade of carbon dioxide with a purity level lower than that of Coleman Grade CO2 is not recommended, particularly in refrigeration applications. Lower purity CO2 can contain more contaminants, leading to performance issues. These contaminants can affect system efficiency, require additional maintenance, and result in costly downtime due to line purging.

Coleman Grade CO2 Available in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

If you are in the mechanical contracting, commercial refrigeration industry, or any other field that requires ultra-pure CO2, Coleman Grade CO2 is the ideal choice. With its high purity level and fewer contaminants, your systems will run more efficiently and last longer. At Greco Gas, we carry an ample supply of this gas, which we mix ourselves on-site to ensure consistent quality.
