Propane is a hydrocarbon (C3H8), predominantly used as a fuel gas; it is sometimes referred to as liquefied petroleum gas, LP-gas, or LPG. It is non-toxic, colorless, and virtually odorless. As with natural gas, an identifying odor is added so the gas can be readily detected, in this case, the chemical Mercaptan, also known as methanethiol, is released to help us identify if propane is leaking.  

Propane is produced from both natural gas processing and crude-oil refining and is nontoxic — it won’t contaminate aquifers or soil. Propane is an approved clean alternative fuel listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act. Nearly 97 percent of propane used in the United States is produced in North America. 

Since propane is a fuel gas, it is often used with Oxygen as an alternative to Acetylene to cut metal.
